Morses Pond Shoreline Improvement
Hydro-Raking Program Abutters and Friends
May 14, 2009

Yesterday, the hydro-raking program ran into serious, near terminal difficulty. The hydro-rake has been picking up stones and rocks that inevitably happens if it is to clear out rooted plants. The harvester has been used for collecting and transporting hydro-raked material that will eventually be sent to the Recycling Center for composting. But, the harvester was not designed for handling stones and rocks.

The series of attached images provide a pictorial story of what is happening. The conveyors (there are three) on the harvester are getting ripped apart. You will note that some sections of the conveyor have already been replaced and work is continuing to replace other sections so the harvester can do what it was designed to do, that is, harvest the weeds. We have been told that replacing all of the conveyor, will cost about $4,000 just for material exclusive of labor. Continued use of the harvester for collecting harvested material, everyone agrees, is not a good idea.

Aquatic Control Technology has a specially designed harvester that they use as a barge for hydro-raking activities. But, it is busy and is not available through the rest of the summer. It costs $165 per hour with an operator. Since the hydro-rake costs $185 per hour and the standard work time is 2 hours per abutter shoreline, the total cost for two hours hydro-raking is $700. The time to hydro-rake is in the spring. Before then, we can revisit hydro-raking again if there is continued interest.

Call if you have questions. Of course, refunds of fee deposits are in order for those participants who did not get hydro-raked.

Fred Fortmiller, for the Committee
