I think you'll find this report very interesting and a worth while read: http://www.morsespond.org/studies/2007_Morses_Pond_Report.pdf Introduction "Aquatic Control Technology, Inc. (Aquatic Control) & ESS Group, Inc. (ESS) has completed the third year of a three-year environmental monitoring program at Morses Pond in the Town of Wellesley, Massachusetts (Figure 1). The long-term active management program has been successfully implemented by Aquatic Control and ESS since the program's 2002 initiation by the Town of Wellesley's Department of Recreation. This program, as well as other water resource projects and programs currently being implemented by the Town of Wellesley, demonstrate the town's continued commitment to the improvement of aquatic conditions at Morses Pond and throughout the community. Morses Pond is a valuable natural resource to the community because it provides recreation for swimmers, habitat for fish and wildlife, aesthetic quality to the surrounding area and surface water recharge to a town-owned well located at the pond. The goal of the monitoring program is to provide the Town of Wellesley with frequent, accurate, and timely data on water quality and aquatic plant growth conditions in Morses Pond throughout the summer season. Using this data, ESS and Aquatic Control have been able to provide the town with real-time recommendations for actively managing water quality conditions in the pond to maintain acceptable conditions for pond users and aquatic life. Water quality data, particularly the weekly Secchi disk depth measurements and phytoplankton (floating algae) analyses, have been used by ESS and Aquatic Control to make decisions with regard to the need for performing aluminum sulfate (alum) and/or copper sulfate treatments. By characterizing the chemical and biological dynamics within Morses Pond throughout a typical season and the phytoplankton community's response to a variety of weather patterns, ESS and Aquatic Control have been able to minimize and often eliminate the use of chemical applications at the pond. This type of proactive pond management enabled the town beach to remain open throughout the entire summer in 2005 through 2007 without any chemical treatment."
