Subject: Lake Cochituate - Three imprtant metings (two TONIGHT)
Hi, Friends of Lake Cochituate:
If you want to know more about the health of Lake Cochituate, or to help make it better, THREE upcoming meetings (two of them TONIGHT!) may interest you (and some of your friends). You can find two of these -- along with helpful LINKS TO BACKGROUND MATERIAL -- at:
http://www.millermicro.com/eventscalendar.html
Tonight, 6-9PM at the Natick Morse Institute Library (14 East Central Street, Natick), Soldier Systems Center's Environmental Open House (a poster session):
DoD's large, multi-branch research facility on Lake Cochituate (the old U.S. Army Natick Laboratories, or "NLabs") has been hard at work cleaning up toxic groundwater plumes headed toward Natick's Springvale drinking-water wells, and will be addressing sediment deposits in the lake. This rare poster session is designed for walk-in traffic, public questions and comments (about the groundwater aspect of its clean-up), or later follow-up.
If you plan to attend the Natick Conservation Commission's NOI Hearing (Mass. DCR's proposal to apply herbicides to Lake Cochituate for aquatic plant control), you can attend this event on the way to that.
Tonight, 7:40PM at Natick Town Hall (13 East Central Street, Natick), the Natick Conservation Commission's NOI Hearing on Mass. DCR's proposal to apply herbicides to Lake Cochituate for aquatic plant control:
Most of us want to stop the infestations of Eurasian water milfoil and other invasive aquatic plants in Lake Cochituate and beyond. But how? Chemicals, or no chemicals? Adequate attention to alternate treatment methods, and to prevent the inter-pond spread of these foreign intruders, or not? These Conservation Commission hearings have closed in Framingham, and were continued in Wayland (March 29th) and Natick (tonight). Expected tonight: A report from an independent expert hired by the Natick Board of Health. And more.
7-9PM Thursday, March 23rd at the Natick Kennedy Senior Center, 117 East Central St. (Rte. 135), Natick, an educational meeting re the Management of Invasive Aquatic Weeds in Lake Cochituate using Up-flow Water
Circulators:
The Cochituate State Park Advisory Committee (CSPAC), Protect Our Water Resources (POWR) and the Mass. Congress of Lakes and Ponds (COLAP) invite you one in a series of public meetings regarding the Management of Invasive Aquatic Weeds in Lake Cochituate.
Chris Knud-Hansen, a Ph.D. limnologist from Colorado, visits Lake Cochituate to introduce a non-chemical method for controlling aquatic-weed infestations of lakes. The SolarBee solar-powered up-flow water circulator has successfully removed Eurasian water milfoil and other problem growths from lakes. One preferred mode of operation permits up to 40-acre coverage by one device, without disturbing bottom sediments.
Although this approach has worked well in other states and in the Province of Quebec since 1997, it has not yet been tried in Massachusetts. Local and State officials and the public will learn about this application of these devices, and will ask the questions necessary to decide upon local action.
More information on up-flow water circulators, and a flier for posting, are online at:
